Lesson Nine - Laodicea

Hey Girls!
It's another week of study in God's Word and I'm looking forward to it!
Remember that the Comment Cafe is open 24/7 for anyone that would like to drop in,
ask questions, share insights and/or fellowship with their sisters throughout the week!

Just a reminder,
that if you are intending on continuing on with the class into Revelation Part Two
then please register by e-mailing me at puregrace@telus.net THIS WEEK!
Once I have all the registrants names I'll be able to let you know the total cost of the workbooks as postage and handling will figure into the final price.

I'll be popping into the Comment Cafe at various times throughout the week,
and will be in for an hour, from 7pm to 8pm this coming Tuesday for our real time chat...

Hope to see you here!

  4. Hi Cathie and anyone else out there,
I am starting to sound like a repeating record but I am having a great deal of difficulty understanding what Jesus is telling the Laodiceans about what their problem(s) are and what they need to do about it. It starts on Day 2 page 79 4th paragragh last line "Can you see how His admonitions about wealth, eye salve, white garments, and lukewarm vs hot and cold are all given in terms they understand?" I am now in Day 4 and 5 and even reading and studying the reference verses, I am not getting it. The questions ask you to note or record what you learn but I don't seem to be learning much. I cross-reference and do word study but I feel like I am reading a language I do not understand. I am sure it will become much clearer after Thursday's class ( It always does!) but I am not understanding very much on my own. It makes me want to run to the commentaries which I know is a no-no at this point. Inductive study does not seem to be working very well for me at this point.
Feeling a bit discouraged but I still send love and hugs to everyone.

  5. Hi Jan, don't try and over think this, you've probably already 'gotten it' and don't even realize it! The historical and geographical background of the actual city plays a role in understanding the question.
Being a major commercial trade and financial centre they were ...
MONEY RICH - yet SPIRITUALLY POOR

They were famous for their production of BLACK WOOL used for clothing - yet were SPIRITUALLY NAKED and in need of being CLOTHED IN WHITE

They were famous for their MEDICAL SCHOOL and EYE SALVE that successfully treated eye diseases - yet were SPIRITUALLY BLIND and in need of THE SPIRITUAL EYE SALVE of The Great Physician to annoint their eyes that they might SPIRITUALLY SEE

The water piped into the city is surely something they could relate to... Jesus would prefer them SPIRITUALLY HOT or COLD... just as they would prefer their physical water, BUT, while they were willing to put up with lukewarm water physically, Jesus would have them know that He would vomit out of HIs mouth those who were SPIRITUALLY LUKEWARM

With all these parellels between their SEEN physical realities running along side their UNSEEN spiritual realities, they had more than enough opportunity to see the TRUTH in terms that they could understand.

Personally, I'm thinking that after hearing this message, everytime they got up in the morning and put on their black wool garment, drank their lukewarm water, sold or used their famous eye salve or opened their till to deposit some more cash money.... they'd be bombarded with just how naked, wretched, miserable, blind and poor they really were! I'm just sayin'!

Would so enjoy hearing some discussion regarding lukewarm Christianity! The visual alone should make us wake up and really think about what we are living out before others and God when it comes to our actions, thoughts and what comes out of our mouths on any given day!

Love you Jan! Hope this helped and did not hinder!

  6. Hi Cathie and all you blogger sisters out there,

Just had to share a very exciting AHA moment. I was working on Lesson 10 when I came to the part about the manna promised to Overcomers. I was dutifully recording information about manna from the OT then In Hebrews it notes that manna is part of the Old Covenent. It dawned on me that we are under the New Covenent, not the Old. Flash forward to John 6:31-40 and 48-51 and I felt like I had been hit with lightening and I felt chills go down my back. Jesus is the manna, the bread of heaven, sent by the Father to give life, just as He sent the earlier, lesser manna to give physical life to the Israelites in the wilderness; they ate the manna but they died. It is the will of the Father, which Jesus was sent to do, that all who believe in the Son will not die but have eternal life. All who eat of Jesus, this Bread out of Heaven, will have eternal life.
I am not doing the best job of explaining but what I can say is that I knew about the manna in the OT and I have studied both John and Hebrews before but I never "got" it before. I did not make the connection. I am so excited right now. Guess there's hope for my ability to understand after all
    Celebrating in His great name
    Love,
    Jan
