Soccer for Somalia

Obedience to God... that's what this is about... and while I couldn't even come close to describing all that transpired as this unfolded I am praying that Angie and Marnie, as well as others will share with you the stories that make this STORY so beautiful.

I received this e-mail from Angie this morning and went to Global National for the embed of the video that follows.  Angie and Marnie were both in our Hebrews study last year and although Marnie was unable to consistently attend our classes due to family commitments, she continued to study and Angie would take home to her what she had gleaned from out time together in class.

Marnie, your obedience to God, the initial 'yes Lord' of your heart, began a ripple in the water of God's Kingdom calendar that will have far reaching effects... so very honoured to have you as my sister.

love,

Hi Cathie,
Thought you might enjoy this video of our Soccer for Somalia. After Marnie and the boys were on Global B.C. it was picked up by Global National and they came out to film some footage. God has been so evident throughout this and will continue to do so. The lady who spoke is my sister-in-law and she and I played for a 20 minute shift. She and my brother drove all the way from Salmon Arm to support this cause...they love the Lord and felt they had to come. How cool it was for her to be filmed. Thank you for praying!
Love...Always,
Angie

  1. Hi Cathie!
Wow! Thank you for posting this story in such an incredible way...God has been so faithful in this whole endeavour...He is so, so, so good!!! There are so many sub-stories, as you may have it, that came out of the passion for this fundraiser...never could I have imagined that it could go this far and reach this many people...we definitely serve a God who thinks much bigger than we do!!! Lives will be saved because of the attention this story brings...thank you for bringing this story to our sisters in Christ...it continues to be a joy and blessing to serve our Lord alongside you...
    With my love,
    Marnie

  2. Hi Girls!
Three weeks ago, after seeing the heartbreak that the Somalian people were going through I sent my donation to World Vision and it felt so inadequate. Marnie came to me the next morning and said "Mom, I feel God is requiring more from me this time." She listened and obeyed and God took over. How else does one explain taking a simple fundraising idea to one coach and it becoming this! First one local newspaper picked it up and ran a small story...then onto Global B.C. and finally Global National.

God has been so faithful in helping me do my part and I felt His strength many, many times. I have been humbled on days when I doubted I could do something and He showed me that without Him I was probably right...BUT GOD!

There are many stories to tell but I will share one. Last Saturday was the day "Soccer for Somalia" was held. It happened to be one of the hottest days this summer. I overheard a father speaking to a group of very hot and exhausted boys. He said, "If you think this is hot think of the Somalian people and that cold bottle of water you have in your hands...
they don't!" What a life lesson he was giving them.

Thank you Edna and Jan sharing this journey and without hesitation saying YES! whatever we can do!

Isn't it something that with all the rain this summer God gave us a day that was a taste of Somalia...99 degress on the field.

Final total was a little over $7700which becomes $15000...God will do wonderful things with this amount and with this story... which is HIS!

    Proud of you Marnie!

    Love...Always,
    Angie

  4. Hello,
I thought I would share with you all a little "sub-story", as you may have it, from our Soccer for Somalia Fundraiser...
The day after our fundraiser, I received an email from a mom (Aman) who had just registered her 5 year old daughter to play soccer for Golden Ears Soccer Club. This soccer club had also been notified of our fundraiser but this mom received the email a little late to have been able to attend the event. Her question to me was simple..."Could she (in particular, her 5 year old daughter Riyah) still donate money to the fundraiser?" Apparently this family has a blueberry farm in the Pitt Meadows/Maple Ridge area. Riyah, the 5 year old girl, had picked berries one day (along with the help of some berry-picking machines!) and then sold blueberries at a road-side stand for 4 days. At the end of 4 days, she made $500...and she had wanted to donate all that money to the hungry children in Somalia. So when Aman, the mom, read the email from her new soccer club about the fundraiser, she immediately contacted me as to whether this was possible. "YES!!!!! It sure is possible!!!"
I phoned her and had a lovely conversation with this young mom. I met her and Riyah the next morning to collect the money and add it to our fundraiser just prior to passing it all off to the World Vision representative. This young mom said her daughter is passionate about giving and had already given some of her own money this past year to the two earthquakes...one in Haiti and the other in Japan. Aman told me that she has received comments from family and friends that they should just keep their money and save it for college educations and such. Aman told me that she too feels compelled to give and that she could not do that (keep this money) with this money her daughter wanted to give. I commended her on her generous, and selfless attitude and told her to keep nurturing that in her daughter. I also told her that sometimes standing up and doing what you believe in can be very hard...and sometimes you stand alone in a crowd or a "sea of loved ones".
This is a very special little family I met...one that God had planned for me to meet and make a connection with. And only our Lord knows where this will end up one day.
    With gratitude,
    Marnie
